The story

In the 1870s, two brilliant paleontologists raced each other across the American West, naming over a hundred dinosaurs — and sabotaging, spying on, and at last openly destroying each other's work to win. After Dinosaurs follows the war through the eyes of Charles H. Sternberg, the fossil hunter who worked for both men and lived long enough to reckon with what it cost.

Framed by two old men meeting in a Kansas museum in the 1920s, it is a story about ambition and obsession, about what competition builds and what it breaks — and about the quiet work of getting the record right.

“Be faithful to the evidence, and patient with the earth.” — Joseph Leidy

The real people

Cope, Marsh, Sternberg, Leidy, and Knight were real men — our rule is to bring them back, not merely portray them.

Yale’s empire-builder — who fought with institutions the way Cope fought with speed.

Reconstruction of the elderly Charles H. Sternberg, mustached, in a museum hall

Charles H. Sternberg

1850–1943

The Kansas fossil hunter who collected for both men — and lived to reckon the cost.

These portraits are AI reconstructions, checked against the photographic record — Cope’s mustache, Marsh’s full beard. The audit is the point.

Something worth knowing

This book has an unusual history — stranger, we think, than the story it tells. Read the novel first. Then come back and ask the only question that matters.
